How DairyCarbon works
Describe annual-average animal groups, replace breed-informed defaults with farm measurements, retrieve reporting-year temperature, select manure handling and annual energy activity, set evidence-based mitigation assumptions, and select Calculate. The model totals enteric CH₄, manure CH₄ and N₂O, energy, refrigerants, and optional purchased-feed emissions.
Purpose
Screen U.S. dairy-farm GHG emissions, find hotspots, and compare enteric, manure, and energy scenarios.
Inputs
Species, class, breed, head, body weight, intake, milk, diet, temperature, manure system, grazing, energy, refrigerants, feed, and mitigation controls.
Calculations
IPCC Tier 2 enteric energy balance, volatile-solids manure CH₄, nitrogen-balance manure N₂O, fuel/electricity CO₂e, and baseline-versus-alternative changes.
Outputs
Annual t CO₂e, source hotspots, per-head and per-kg-milk intensity, physical gas quantities, avoided emissions, and licensed CSV audit.
